A SIMPLE DEFINITION OF FAITH

A. From the time we believe God’s plan of salvation and obey His plan, we live by

B. The basis for our message about faith is a conversation that Jesus had with a Roman
Army centurion in Matthew 8:5-13 (708)
I. Matthew wrote that a centurion approached Jesus and asked for His help. V5
A. A centurion was: Roman Army Officer who had charge of 100 soldiers.
B. The centurion expressed concern for his servant who was paralyzed. V6
1. He respected the authority of Jesus.
2. Jesus responded, “I will come and heal him.” V7
3. The centurion replied that he just needed Jesus’ word and that he understood
authority. Vv8-9
II. Jesus was impressed and said to His followers. “I have not found such great faith,
not even in Israel.” Pharisees and Sadducees: Matthew 16:1-4; disciples: Matthew 8:23-26
A. Why did Jesus compliment the centurion? (Vv8,13) He believed what Jesus said.
III. A simple definition of faith.
A. Faith is taking Jesus/God at His word.
