    Introduction
         A.  Question about rating our interest in service to God.
         B.  The basis for our lesson is Colossians 1:8-12 (870).
         C.  Let's focus on three aspects of Paul's prayer for the Colossian Christians
              that can benefit us.

     I.  "All wisdom and spiritual understanding."  V9b

         A.  Before we have the wisdom and understanding of God's will, we must have
              knowledge.

              1.  Note the parallel between newborn babies and newborn Christians in 1
                   Peter 2:1-3 (894)

              2.  If the elementary aspects of God's word are understood, the Christian
                   has the opportunity to increase his wisdom and understanding. 

         B.  Knowledge about a matter enables us to become interested.  Illustration 

         C.  Without much knowledge our understanding and wisdom of God's word is

   II.  "That you might walk worthy of the Lord." V10a

         A.  We must be involved in God's service to icrease our interest and
              our spiritual growth.  Illustration:

  III.  "Being fruitful"  10c

         A.  Success increases our interest.  Illustration:
              Colossians 1:5-6

         B.  We can have success in God's service because of our connection with Christ.

         C.  Let's be reminded that when we accept a spiritual responsibility, God works in
              us.  Philippians 2:12-13 (868)
