WHY DID GOD REQUIRE A BLOOD SACRIFICE?
Introduction
A. I looked in a songbook about the blood of Christ, and here are some of the lyrics:
B. The first lesson in the series, THE BLOOD SACRIFICE, is in answer to the above
question.
I. When Adam and Eve sinned, the death penalty was placed on humans.
Genesis 2:16-17 (2); Genesis 3:1-6,22-24.
A. They died spiritually. Gen. 3:24
B. Adam and Eve died physically. Gen. 5:5
C. Every human who lived after them would die spiritually (Romans 3:23,
P831: 6:23a) physically. Hebrews 9:27 (888); Romans 5:12-14 (832)
II. Because of the death penalty on humans, God required a sacrifice but why blood? Gen.
9:4-5 (6); Leviticus 17:10-14 (97)
A. Blood represents life. Gen. 9:4; Leviticus 17:11,14
B. A life may receive atonement only by the sacrifice of a life. Lev. 17:11
C. The just penalty of human sin against God is death (Spiritual and physical), and the
blood of a sanctioned animal as a sacrifice was temporarily accepted by God until the
sacrifice of Christ. Hebrews 9:7 (887)
