INTRODUCTION TO A STUDY OF THE BEATTITUDES
Matthew 5:1-2 (705)
I. This passage marks the beginning of the famous Sermon on the
mount given by Jesus.
A. After He had prayed all night and that morning ordained His
apostles.
B. Went up on a mountain and prepared to teach a large group of
people.
1. Date: 27-29 A.D.
2. Mountain: Horns of Hattin or hill located NW of Galilee and about
0.6 of a mile west of Capernaum.
3. Jesus sat down (customary Matthew 23:2) and started laying the
foundation of what it meant to be His disciple in God’s kingdom.
II. Several terms and aspects of a Beattitude.
A. Definition: describes the qualities of those who belong to
God’s kingdom and the blessings they will receive. Is a matter of the
heart (Proverbs 4:23) , an attitude.
1. The Beattitudes are divided into four aspects of attitudes:
a. attitude toward self- vv3-5 b. Attitude toward GOD
v6 c. attitudes toward others-vv7-9 d. attitude toward trials;
vv10-12
2. Jesus presented eight Beattitudes.
B. The serve as a blue print for spiritual living under God’s rule.
1. They are presented in sequential order. Illustrate: Monkey bars.
2. Grace is involved. Matthew 5:8; Matthew 5:27-28.
III. Three components of a Beattitude using v3.
1. The pronouncement of recipient. Blessed means a happiness
that comes only from God; a state of having received
God’s favor,
2. The quality of life needed to be blessed by God-the poor in spirit.
3. The blessing received-The kingdom of Heaven
