A STUDY FROM THE LETTER OF JAMES (Part Two)
Is Our Religion Acceptable to God?
James 1:26-27 (892)
Introduction
A. This morning we will focus on what James has written about religion. Our lesson
text is James 1:26-27.
B. Let’s ask ourselves if our religion is acceptable to God?
C. The phrase in v26, “If anyone among you thinks he is religious” carries with it the
idea of self-decertion.
D. For a few minutes let’s focus on four signs of genuine religion. James 1:26-27
I. Genuine religion bridles the tongue. James 1:26
A. Four reasons to be on constant alert to bridle the tongue.
1. Because the tongue controls the whole person. James 3:1-4
2. Because the tongue determines the course of nature (life). James 3:6
3. Because the tongue can not be completely tamed. James 3:7-8
4. Because it is not appropriate to bless God and curse people with the same
tongue. James 3:9-10
B. We need wisdom from God. James 3:13,17
II. Genuine religion cares for orphans and widows (the needy). James 1:27; 2:14-17
A. Example: 1 Corinthians 16:1-4 (851)
III. Genuine religion involves clean living. James 1:27; Romans 12:1-2 (837)
IV. Genuine religion is accepted by God. James 1:27; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 (855)
Conclusion
A. Is my definition of religion the same as James has defined religion?
B. Two practices to keep our religion on track: fellowshipping with God’s people and
continuing in God’s word.
