Introduction
A. Let’s focus on the fifth beatitude as we continue our study based on the beatitudes.
Matthew 5:7
I. Let’s define the word “mercy.”
A. “Mercy is a form of love determined by the state or condition of its objects. Their
state is one of suffering and need, while they may be unworthy or ill-deserving. mercy
is at once the disposition of love respecting such, and the kindly ministry of love for
their relief.” Unger’s Bible Dictionary
B. The attitude of people who are merciful
1. Affected by the suffering and needs of others.
2. Motivated to encourage and lessen the suffering.
3. Kind, compassionate and forgiving.
4. Willing to exceed what is expected.
C. Jesus told the Parable OfThe Good Samaritan in Luke:10(762) which is a story about
showing mercy. Luke 10:25-37 (762)
II. How does a person become merciful?
A. Mercy comes from a heart based on the first four beatitudes. Vv3,4,5 and 6.
B. The motivation comes from the realization that we needed mercy and that
God had mercy on us.
1. Romans 5:8 (832): God has shown His mercy for us through Christ
2. 1 Peter 1:18-19 (895): How has redeemed us through the precious blood
of Christ.
3. 2 Corinthians 5:20-21 (854): Christ paid our sin debt.
III. “For they shall obtain mercy.”
A. God deals with each person according to his/her attitude. Psalm 18:24-27 (435;
Matthew 6:14-15 (707); Galatians 6:7-8 (756);
B. The merciful will be blessed also by their fellowman. Luke 6:38 (756)
